From The Vault. Sam See and Glyn Mason
(Sound Vault) 7.5 stars: The veteran rockers have collaborated over the years and following Sam See's worthy guitar instrumental album of about 18 months are back together, working a residency at the College Lawn Hotel, Prahran, Melbourne. This disc of 16 songs - generous in length as well as spirit - was cut live in the Sound Vault studios and with just their twin voices and guitars it's a souped up, fat, deep sound. To carry it off calls for total control and musicianship, which fortunately is not a question in this case. The duo rip through an interesting set drawn from the baby boom glory days - The Weight, Neil Young's Don't Let It Bring You Down, Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues, Rag Mama Rag - and a bunch of others, including a welcome reprise of Mason's superb It's Only Love, all of it delivered with panache in the vocals and guitar work alike. There are no rough edges here, simply a ton of finesse as you'd expect from guys who have aged as richly as the Grange Hermitage they admire. Sundays, from 4:30 pm at the College Lawn - damn if it don't sound like a good time. Shane Nichols - Australian Financial Review |
