GORGI QUILL REVIEWS
:: Gorgi Quill CD Launch - Manchester Lane, Melbourne - August 2006
By: Louise Preece

Many Australians might recognise Gorgi Quill as the travel reporter from Channel Nine’s Today Show. The young journalist has now revealed another depth to her persona as a talented singer. Gorgi launched her debut CD titled ‘Edward’ at Manchester Lane recently and it proved a winner as audiences listened in awe to her melodic voice.

Channel Nine personality Steven Jacobs hosted the CD launch and several other TV friends turned up to support the star. Many of Gorgi’s family and friends also attended the launch, including her husband Justin.

The CD, simply titled ‘Edward’, is a mix of melodic, gentle songs and covers, which Gorgi says are all “reflections of happy or sad moments in her life”. Gorgi says the CD is named after her late grandfather Edward and represents her “beautiful love” for him. With harmonious songs such as ‘Danny Boy’, ‘Secret Love’ and ‘Sunshine On My Shoulders’, Gorgi says some of her influences as a child were Eva Cassidy and John Denver. The songs were perceptibly chosen because of Gorgi’s emotional and sentimental attachment to them and her performance of them on the night was exceptional.

Gorgi’s jazz band must also be complimented, who provided an excellent match to her voice, including violin, cello, and grand piano. Many of you won’t know that Gorgi’s talents also extend to performing in the theatrical hit “We Will Rock You” and the musical “Carousel”. She also has her own corporate band and ‘Edward’ appears to be another notch on her list of creative achievements.

‘Edward’ is out now and offers excellent classic tunes for those who prefer smooth and easy listening. www.mediasearch.com.au

Edward
Gorgi Quill (Sound Vault)

Named after her late grandfather and finishing with the song she sang to him on his death bed, it's obvious Edward is a very personal album for former Holiday Actor Quill.

The eclectic song choice - from Roy Orbinson's You Got It to ye olde Irish favourite Danny Boy - also hints at being a shopping list of songs that mean a lot to the Today show reporter.

There's no denying the beauty of her voice and every note is sung with the enunciation and strong vibrato of someone who's got a lot of stage musicals behind them.

Aside from dodging the killer end notes of You Got It and over-singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow's simple and effective melody, the results are good.

Little-heard opener I Don't Know How To Say Goodbye and the under-rated Muppet gem Rainbow Connection are well arranged, but it's when she gives in to the swing on the jazzy Secret Love that she really cuts loose. John Crompton's sax solo on the latter number is an added bonus.

Albums don't come much more easy-listening then this, but nonetheless it's a fine collection of well-sung tunes.

Edward for inspiration

Gorgi Quill, a Channel 9 reporter, has released her debut album, Edward. DAVID SMITH N04CK111
GORGI Quill has named her debut album after ``the most inspirational person'' in her life her late grandfather, Edward Gleeson.

Quill said the album, entitled Edward, was a compilation of songs that reminded her of him. He died in 2002, aged 93.
One such song is the Irish classic Danny Boy. Others include Rainbow Connection, You've Got It and You've Got a Friend.
The Port Melbourne singer said balancing her full-time job as a reporter for Channel 9's The Today Show and her music commitments for the past 16 months had been tough, but she enjoyed the challenge.
She said she put aside her dreams of a career in music at the age of 21 to concentrate on journalism.
``But there was always this nagging voice inside telling me to do music,'' she said. ``I have always wanted to make an album.''
Quill said she recorded with a band in the studio to keep ``that wonderful live element''.
``I didn't want people to listen to my sound and think it was manufactured,'' she said.
Edward will be released in Manchester Lane, Melbourne, on Thursday, August 17.
The independent release is available from Sound Vault Records at the website www.soundvault. com.au.
