COSMO COSMOLINO REVIEWS

Cosmo Cosmolino
Nektar

Like a summer breeze on a sultry day, this Melbourne-based quintet, playing mostly instrumental music inspired by European gypsy and tango orchestras, adds a breath of fresh air to the Melbourne music scene. Featuring two violin players Hope Csutoros (from My Friend The Chocolate Cake) and Andrea Keeble (Stroll), cellist Helen Mountfort (My Friend The Chocolate Cake, Not Drowning Waving), double bass player Dan Witton (Blue Grassy Knoll, Ennio Morricone Experience) and Judy Gunson (Stiletto Sisters) on piano accordion, this remarkable quintet of virtuosos dazzles the listener with Latin rhythms, Hungarian and Spanish folk songs, playful French and Italian-inspired pieces, a haunting composition that tells the story of street violence in Argentina and a number of originals including Keeble's uplifting Emma's Song, a tribute to her late friend. One of the most adventurous and satisfying albums of the year, Nektár is a must-buy for anyone who appreciates acoustic music with a difference.
